March tax collections missed estimates and last year’s actual numbers in the latest report from the Kansas Department of Revenue.
Overall tax collections were $577 million, below estimates by almost 11 percent and March 2025 by almost 9.5 percent.
Individual income tax collections were over $271 million, which missed estimates by 1.3 percent but passed March 2025 by almost 4 percent. Corporate income receipts, however, were -$23.5 million, missing estimates by almost 160 percent and short of last year by 147 percent. Combined retail sales and compensating use tax receipts, $262 million, actually beat estimates by 3.2 percent and last year by 6.2 percent.
Kansas Governor Laura Kelly says the March numbers reflect poor decisions by the Kansas Legislature, saying revenues have now missed estimates by over $175 million total just since the latest Consensus Revenue Estimating Group report this past November. She also criticized lawmakers for ending their regular session before April’s Consensus Revenue Estimating Group update.
