Residents are encouraged to get a good meal and support the Emporia High Theatre Department at the same time this weekend.
The American Legion Post 5, 2921 West 12th, has its Second Saturday breakfast. Typically, proceeds benefit maintenance and upkeep needs for the building — but all proceeds from this weekend benefit the Theatre Department and its upcoming trip to International Thespian Festival in Bloomington, Indiana, where the troupe will perform the Vietnam War play “A Piece of My Heart.” Director Amanda Ballard is grateful for the support and thankful for the work the students have done on the play.
Ballard says the play is an emotional look at the war through the eyes of six nurses before, during and after the war.
Vietnam veteran Ed Rathke says the play brings back memories of his service 51 years ago.
Veteran Clay Childs says “a production like this speaks to all generations,” especially families who have a military service history.
The breakfast goes from 7:30-10:30 am. Suggested donation is $7 a plate, which includes your choice of pancakes, eggs, biscuits and gravy, bacon, sausage, baked goods and other breakfast items.
Meanwhile, the Theatre Department has a preview benefit performance of “A Piece of My Heart” at Emporia High on June 6. Fundraising is approaching the $30,000 goal for the trip. More information is available on Emporia High School Theatre social media.
