Law enforcement agencies are gearing up for an impaired driving enforcement campaign.
Typically, the focus on these efforts deals with alcohol — but the April 20 enforcement effort is all about driving under the influence of drugs, especially marijuana. The date is not chosen at random. April 20 is commonly called “420 Day” and has been linked to marijuana use for decades, but law enforcement at the local, state and federal level say pot and other drugs like it make it harder to drive because of slower reaction times and reduced judgment and coordination behind the wheel.
Officially, the campaign goes from Wednesday through April 21. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is among the law enforcement entities areawide and nationwide involved. Drivers can expect a heavier law enforcement presence through the enforcement period.
Lyon County Deputy Danny Broyles says people choosing to use marijuana or “any impairing drug” should get a designated driver, use a rideshare service or call a cab. Residents who see impaired drivers on the road need to call their local law enforcement agency.
