Overflow parking was used at times as the American Legion Post 5 held its Second Saturday fundraising breakfast.
Turnout has increased since the breakfast was introduced about nine months ago, and Post Commander Ed Rathke says the growth was “way beyond what we were expecting.”
Proceeds from the April event went to the Emporia High Theatre Department, which is performing the Vietnam play “A Piece of My Heart” at International Thespian Festival this summer and is among the featured performing troupes for the first time. Rathke says veterans have wanted to help the theater department since The Wall That Heals made its appearance in Emporia last summer.
The theater department had several performers in costume as they attended, including Kaylee Wellman.
Wellman says the play was an eye-opener for her.
E-High Theatre is almost to goal of $30,000. Saturday’s breakfast generated over $2,600 with over 400 people attending.
