Progress has taken place in downtown Emporia as repairs continue on a sinkhole that developed late last month.
City Engineer Jim Ubert says the collapsed 44-inch storm sewer has been replaced at and near the failure site near the 10th and Commercial intersection. Pavement may be replaced as soon as Tuesday or Wednesday.
The project is set to be part of the Emporia City Commission agenda, in part because of the underlying situation, the current set of repairs and the potential need for additional repairs between Commercial Street and the alley in the 10 block of West 10th. Commissioners could approve financing for a project that would include repairs on Commercial from 10th south to 8th at a estimated cost of $850,000, with a $150,000 in additional funding to cover possible cost overruns.
City commissioners have put a lot on their agendas for Wednesday. In the action session, besides the storm sewer discussion, commissioners could approve the development agreement and final plat for the Cedarbrook Meadows residential and commercial development along West 18th between Jones Aquatic Center and Americus Road. Commissioners could also approve the 2026 Street Rehab project list, a Request to Exchange Federal Funds agreement with the Kansas Department of Transportation, a tax credit sale and an Environmental Use Control agreement with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. The city will also officially receive the award for the best-tasting water in the state from the Kansas Rural Water Association.
Study meeting agenda items include recommendations for a comprehensive bike and pedestrian plan, a bike playground and park proposal, baseball parks, street lights for the Flint Hills Crossing/QuikTrip development and a franchise agreement with Evergy.
The action meeting will be at 11 am at the Municipal Court Room. The study meeting follows at White Auditorium Wheeler Conference Room.
