The latest Honor Flight has returned safely for USD 252 Southern Lyon County.
Students, veterans and school staffers returned from our nation’s capital around 8:20 pm, capping off another intensive trip. Olpe High senior Jaiden Kurzen has had family members in the military — and on a previous Honor Flight.
Madison veteran Mervin Harlan served during the Vietnam War but wasn’t in battle during his time in the US Marines. However, his eye was on another time period. Harlan was looking forward to seeing the Holocaust Museum.
Olpe junior Adrianna Sieberns thoroughly enjoyed the trip.
Emporia veteran Keith Carnes served in Vietnam. He says the trip was an eye-opener — and a far cry from the atmosphere surrounding the Vietnam War after he came home.
Carnes says the trip benefits veterans and students alike.
Harlan had high praise for the Honor Flight program.
Coordinator Megan McGuire says that’s the kind of feedback she likes to hear, and she’s also grateful for the ongoing community support.
Part of the trip also included a brief visit by Kansas Second District Congressman Derek Schmidt, who met with the group at the Korean War and Lincoln Memorials. Olpe High graduate Grace Coughlin, now a US Navy cadet, also met with the group outside the Navy Memorial.
