As plans continue to formulate for repairs to the Rocky Ford bridge deck, Lyon County is announcing the closure of a county road for a separate bridge replacement project.
Road 310 is closing Wednesday between Roads C and D. The 300 block of Road 310 will be closed during the project, and the Lyon County Highway Department has not mentioned how long work could go or why the bridge is getting replaced.
Issues with the Rocky Ford bridge went public during the Lyon County Commission meeting last week when County Engineer Wayne Scritchfield said rebar was poking through the new concrete deck in spots, following the decking process in early April. The potential cause or causes haven’t been confirmed. Assistant County Engineer Jim Brull says the Highway Department is consulting with an engineer and project contractor on potential ways to handle the situation. The old bridge, alternately known as the Bird Bridge as the site of the Sandra Bird murder in 1983, is getting shut down to vehicle traffic but will remain in place after it was built in 1907.
