Southern Lyon County softball is off to a historic start this spring, and the numbers tell the story.
The Olpe/Hartford High School cooperative sits at 10-0 on the season, already nearing uncharted territory for a program that has never won more than 11 games in a single campaign. With more than half the regular season still ahead, this year’s squad has a chance to rewrite the record books.
Head coach Scott Steinke, now in his third year at the helm, points to one key factor behind the early success — defense.
That consistency in the field has helped Southern Lyon County control games and build confidence as the wins continue to pile up. For a relatively young program, now in just its seventh season, the team is embracing the opportunity to make history in more ways than one.
While the start has been impressive, the road ahead will provide a significant test. The schedule toughens this week with 3A contender Burlington set to visit Olpe on Thursday, followed by a stretch of challenging matchups to close out the regular season.
Regardless of who lines up in the opposing dugout, Steinke’s message to his team remains the same — stay consistent and focus on their style of play.
If Southern Lyon County can maintain that approach, the unbeaten start could be just the beginning of a season to remember.
