Meanwhile, the Marais des Cygnes above Reading is officially in flood. Moderate flooding is now underway as the river went above the 19-foot flood stage around 10 am and went past 21.4 feet shortly before 2 pm. The current projected crest is 23.6 feet Monday evening before returning below flood stage Tuesday morning.
Flooding follows anywhere from 2-3 inches of rain across the north half of Lyon County as part of two rounds of storms Sunday and Monday.
Midnight-noon Monday: Two rounds of storms produce heavy rain, scattered large hail, isolated high winds; flood warning active for Marais des Cygnes above Reading
Two waves of thunderstorms brought hail, high wind and brief heavy rain to the KVOE listening area Sunday into Monday.
Wave No. 1 started before 1 pm, eventually leading to hail as big as eggs in Madison, as well as 70 mph wind gusts between Reading and Osage City. Over 100 Evergy customers lost power in scattered nature across the area, while the northwest quarter of Osage City also lost power for several hours Sunday. Road flooding was also reported near Lake Kahola, just three days after an EF-1 tornado hit cabins, other structures and boats along the north side of the lake.
The second wave started impacting the KVOE listening area shortly after midnight, with several severe thunderstorm warnings affecting northwest Lyon, most of Morris and Wabaunsee counties — and leading to a pair of Lyon County roads with water over them, the 200 block of Road J and the 900 block of Road 215. Flash flood warnings also affected parts of Morris and Wabaunsee counties as well.
