Downtown Emporia will be festive Saturday as Hispanics of Today and Tomorrow holds its annual Cinco de Mayo festival.
Board President Mike Torres says the 800 block of Commercial will be blocked off for the event. The original plan was also to cordon off the 900 block, but the area near 10th and Commercial is still under repair from a sinkhole that developed a month ago. Regardless, the schedule is full from 11 am to 3 pm.
Cinco wouldn’t be Cinco without a lot of food options.
Torres says the festivities are great, but the whole reason HOTT has events like Cinco de Mayo is to generate funds and awareness for its scholarship program.
Torres says 25 scholarships worth nearly $25,000 total will be handed out this weekend. Scholarships are for graduating high school students who either are or will be members of Hispanics of Today and Tomorrow.
