Council Grove baseball continues to roll through the spring schedule, and the Braves are starting to look like a serious contender for a deep postseason run. With their eyes set on a first state tournament appearance since 2015, momentum continues to build.
Head coach Matt Wilkens points to the work put in long before the season started, along with strong support from around the community, as key factors behind the team’s success.
Council Grove now sits at 17-1 after Lyndon forfeited a scheduled doubleheader for this Friday, adding to what has already been an impressive resume. The Braves’ offense has been one of the most productive in the area, with seven regulars batting above .350.
Reid Buttrey has led the charge at the plate, hitting a blistering .639 with nine doubles. Luke Stewart has driven in a team-high 20 runs, part of a lineup that features eight players with at least 14 RBI. It’s a noticeable shift in offensive philosophy compared to previous seasons, something Wilkens says has been intentional.
Buttrey’s impact doesn’t stop at the plate. The junior has been dominant on the mound as well, posting a 7-0 record in more than 27 innings of work.
Maxton Villalobos has also played a key role despite a change in responsibilities. After suffering a torn ACL during football season, the All-State shortstop has moved to third base when he’s not pitching. He’s compiled a 5-0 record on the hill while batting an even .500.
With six games remaining in the regular season, four carry major weight in the Flint Hills League race, giving the Braves a chance to solidify their standing before postseason play begins.
Council Grove holds the top spot in the 3A Regional 3 standings and will look to maintain that position Saturday when they travel to Osage City for a key matchup.
