An investigation is underway following a structure fire in east Emporia Monday evening.
According to Emporia Fire Battalion Chief Tony Fuller, Emporia Fire and Emporia Police were called to 920 Sunrise just after 8 pm for a report of a structure fire.
Fuller says no human occupants were home at the time of the fire; however, 16 cats and one dog were inside at the time. He tells KVOE News that after the fire was quelled, crews spent a portion of their time trying to track down the animals.
No injuries to humans were reported and the fire did not spread to neighboring homes. The state of the animals inside has not been divulged.
The cause and origin of the fire are currently pending. KVOE News will have updates as they are made available.
