There’s a small chance of any thunderstorm activity Tuesday, but severe weather can’t be ruled out.
The Storm Prediction Center has a marginal risk for southeast Lyon, southeast Osage and all of Coffey and Greenwood counties, indicating a risk of wind and hail. Areas immediately along the Kansas Turnpike, including Emporia, are not currently affected, but Lyon County communities like Hartford, Neosho Rapids and Olpe are included.
The National Weather Service Topeka office says there are two main issues with any severe weather development Tuesday. A stout cap, or temperature inversion, is expected and may not break, thus ending any severe weather chances while also making it extremely difficult for updrafts to become storms in the first place. Also, an approaching frontal boundary may move in too quickly to take advantage of hot, humid conditions as high temperatures top 90 degrees.
