Not everything is in place yet, but processes are moving forward as the Americus City Council moves toward the official end of its police department.
Mayor Dustin Wright says the department’s cruiser will be sold at a dealer auction in Topeka. The date for that has not been announced.
Most other inventory looks like it will also be sold at auction, although it is yet to be determined whether that will be an in-person or online event. City Council members are waiting for guidance from City Attorney Steve Atherton on whether firearms can be sold during that event or whether other sale options need to be considered.
For evidence, Wright says many of the items are dated to the point where they can be disposed, although it’s unclear whether they need to be burned or disposed through other means. Other evidence will be transferred to the Lyon County Attorney’s Office.
City Council members voted three months ago to disband the department, citing issues with staffing and coverage as reasons for the move.
