The time period through early Tuesday could well be eventful in regards to the weather.
A wind advisory now continues areawide through 9 pm Sunday, with wind gusts already above 40 mph at the Emporia Municipal Airport. Southerly gusts could be as high as 45 mph through the alert period.
A marginal-to-slight risk area has been posted by the Storm Prediction Center for area counties, with areas along and west of a Eureka-to-Melvern line in the slight risk. Potential hazards by late afternoon or early evening include hail to the sizer of baseballs, wind gusts to 70 mph and isolated tornadoes.
With damaging storms already through the area over the last month, and with graduation ceremonies for Emporia and several area districts Sunday afternoon, Lyon County Sheriff Jeff Cope says the setup is the latest reminder to be weather-aware.
Monday afternoon and evening, especially by mid-afternoon, could be busy. The SPC has the KVOE listening area in an enhanced to moderate risk,. Initially, areas along and west of a line from near Eureka to near Melvern were in the moderate risk area. The midday outlook pushed the moderate risk area to just north of the Kansas Turnpike, with areas along the highway and further east — including Emporia — in an enhanced risk. All hazards remain possible, including hail perhaps bigger than baseball size, wind gusts at or above 80 mph and tornadoes, including some that could possibly be strong. Flash flooding is a concern just north of the KVOE listening area.
Monday also has a wind advisory for Lyon, Morris and Wabaunsee counties from 9 am to 9 pm. A separate wind advisory is now coming for Chase and Greenwood counties from 9 am to 8 pm. South wind gusts are again expected up to 45 mph.
Regardless of weather concerns for Sunday or Monday, Cope encourages residents to have several methods readily available to get severe weather information, including weather radios and local media.
Lyon County typically tests the sirens at noon Monday. A decision on the weekly test will likely be made Monday morning.
