While a lot of people are breathing a sigh of relief after the potential for severe weather Monday, the Emporia Recreation Commission is determining the path forward after severe storms earlier in the month.
Rec Commission Director Amanda Gutierrez says there should be decisions coming soon after a dugout roof was pulled up and flipped over at Peter Pan Park’s Flint Hills Optimist Fields. Gutierrez says there was other damage as well.
The original plan was to have all repairs handled with baseball tournaments scheduled last week, but there’s a lot of work to do before that can happen.
Gutierrez made her comments to KVOE News shortly after the Rec Commission’s monthly meeting Monday. She also updated Rec Commission board members about the ongoing work of the Steering Committee, which has been working for nearly two years to determine the scope of public recreation facilities in Emporia. The plan is still in hand to build new at Jones Aquatic Center and to renovate Lee Beran Rec Center. Gutierrez says the JAC site works well for a new facility.
KVOE News has reported the cost has increased, and Gutierrez says there are still discussions about what to include — and what to remove — in order to fit the budget.
Rec Commission board members also got an update on pump repairs to the Lee Beran Rec Center’s indoor pool after the pump failed and had to be rebuilt. Gutierrez says things have gone well at the pool since the repairs.
