Dollar General has made a substantial contribution to the United Way of the Flint Hills.
In a news release Friday, the United Way announced it has received a $3,000 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation (DGLF) to support summer youth literacy programs in the local community, including the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, Read to Your Bunny and Summer Climbin’. Community Impact Manager Maddie Craig, in the aforementioned news release, stated, “Promoting early childhood and youth literacy is something very important to United Way of the Flint Hills.”
The funds from the DGLF will be used to offer more books to local youth in both English and Spanish, with Summer Climbin’ specifically visiting summer meal sites to pass out books to children under the age of 18. Founded in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has donated millions in dollars to promote literacy across the country.
The 2026 list of grants represents a record year for the foundation, with nearly $16 million in grants distributed nationwide. Denine Torr, Executive Director of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, says, “We are grateful for the impact teachers and educators make every day and are excited to have another record-setting year of helping expand literacy access for learners of all ages. These funds will help educators enhance their instruction and create opportunities that help empower students to reach their full potential.”
