Friday’s Freedom 250 event organized by the Lyon County Republicans group let residents meet with a number of candidates for office, simultaneously getting ready for America’s 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and Election Day later in the year.
Activities included information booths, patriotic music and a limited number of speeches. US Senator Roger Marshall says early colonists saw the need to chart a new path for a new country.
Marshall is now into a re-election bid. He says Americans are safer under Donald Trump than they were under Democrat Joe Biden.
Attorney General Kris Kobach is also running for re-election, focusing his campaign in part what he sees as “injuries” to the state constitution over the last 25-50 years.
Kobach is fully on board with changing the selection method for Kansas Supreme Court justices, going from the longstanding approach of using a nominating commission to a public vote.
Also at the podium was Chris Holton of the conservative policy organization Center for Security Policy. Holton outlined several policy concerns from the center’s standpoint, including the presence of Islam in America and groups like Muslim Brotherhood.
Holton also sees China’s increasing influence as a threat to America from without, as well as antifa from within.
There were several other candidates on hand as well, including gubernatorial candidates Joy Eakins, Charlotte O’Hara, Stacy Rogers and Philip Sarnecki; 13th District House candidate Duane Droge; and Lyon County Commission First District candidate Ken Duft and Rolland Trahoon.
