The Memorial Day version of Click It or Ticket is now into its second week.
Lyon County Deputy Danny Broyles says law enforcement officers are, as usual, looking for all violations of all kinds — but they are focusing on one aspect of traffic safety.
Broyles says deputies consider an observed failure to wear a seatbelt as a primary infraction, which can lead to secondary infractions with resulting traffic stops.
The special traffic enforcement effort goes through June 1.
Broyles says seatbelt use appears to be up as time goes by, but the Kansas Traffic Safety Resource Office says just under 85 percent of drivers use their belts as part of an observed-use study done by the Kansas Department of Transportation announced last year. In 2024, almost 98 percent of people involved in crashes were wearing seatbelts. In the wrecks from 2024 that resulted in at least one person dying, only 53 percent of people in the vehicles involved were using seatbelts.
