Bushong started the Memorial Day weekend with a car and bike show and first-ever Gary Smith Memorial community fish fry Saturday.
The threat of rainfall kept some potential cars and trucks parked at home, but Doc Schneider of Council Grove brought a 1967 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Holiday edition — meaning a few extra features. The car had a short run, only about two years, before the design changed. Schneider says that helps it to stand out from other cars at shows. He also says it takes him back, in a manner of speaking.
Schneider says it was a good weekend to be at the North Lyon County Veterans Memorial.
While the car turnout was limited, there were close to 20 motorcycles on display and live music.
The event also drew attention to the longstanding project to build out a memorial campus in the heart of Bushong. Already with a memorial in place, work is fully underway to restore the former Bushong bank as a museum — but with the death of Smith last year, that project has slowed considerably. Smith’s widow, Dianne Bedner-Smith, is asking for help in completing the museum with items like a cement floor for a fireplace, as well as electricity. People wanting to help can call Bedner-Smith at 620-757-8143.
