The David Traylor Zoo is launching into a new statewide initiative through the sumer.
The Emporia Zoo is part of the KaZOO Wild Adventure program that’s now underway. On KVOE’s Morning Show on Wednesday, Director Brenda Young said it’s part of an effort to get people to see zoos across Kansas.
Participating zoos also include:
*Hutchinson Zoo, Hutchinson
*Lee Richardson Zoo, Garden City
*Rolling Hills Zoo, Salina
*Sedgwick County Zoo, Wichita
*Sunset Zoo, Manhattan
*Topeka Zoo and Conservation Center, Topeka
The Wild Adventure Passport effort is starting as the zoo plans to have a presence in the Unbound Gravel Family Zone at 18 East 6th, with information about local plants and animals. There will also be a prairie dog cornhole game available.
On site, this also comes as the zoo is nearing the end of an exhibit expansion for the king vultures. Young says new heaters will be installed within the next two weeks, and then the vultures can enjoy the new space — which is 80 percent bigger than the current exhibit and lets the vultures stay in the space all year. The zoo is also well into the latest phase of fundraising for a significant expansion in years to come, with an announcement possibly by early to mid-June.
Summer hours are adjusting a bit, with Saturday now open until 7 pm — matching hours for Sunday and Wednesday.
