The Kansas Special Olympics Torch is in Emporia, but, as always, won’t be staying for long.
The torch was brought to Emporia Wednesday afternoon by an escort of local law enforcement as part of the annual Torch Run for Special Olympics as part of the torch’s journey to the state games in Wichita this weekend. The torch will now depart Emporia right around 9:30 am with the annual processional down Commercial Street led, again, by local law enforcement, Special Olympics athletes and KVOE General Manager Ron Thomas for Ron’s Ride benefiting Special Olympics.
The ride will start at Emporia State University’s Kellogg Circle and proceed from 12th and Commercial to 4th and Commercial, with a quick stop at Hetlinger Developmental Services, before heading to Olpe. Thomas’ annual ride is once again raising funds to support local Special Olympians at the state games, with donations still being accepted.
There are several ways to donate to Ron’s Ride, either online at KVOE.com, by mailing checks or cash to Ron Thomas, PO Box 968, Emporia, KS, 66801, or by texting 620-344-1402 with your name and donation amount.
KVOE has photos and a YouTube Short from the torch’s arrival in Emporia available here.
