There will now be a review of the USD 253 Board of Education’s decision to close Logan Avenue Elementary School at the state level.
Thursday, organizers of the Save Logan Avenue petition campaign submitted the formal petition to the Kansas State Board of Education for review. Lead organizer Olivia Grover told KVOE News Thursday the petition had gained more than 1,500 signatures over the last month.
Of those, at least 941 signatures were deemed valid with Grover still reviewing the pages for validity at the time of her correspondence with KVOE News. Just over 800 valid signatures were required to force a review by Kansas State Department of Education General Counsel Scott Gordon.
Following that review, the state will present recommendations to the USD 253 Board of Education on the matter before another vote on whether or not to close the doors of Logan at the end of the 2026-27 school year. The board previously voted in support of the closure 5-2 as part of recommendations from the district’s cost containment committee, as the district looks to find roughly $4 million in cost savings due to several factors in recent years, including a notable decline in enrollment.
KVOE News has reached out to USD 253 Board President Art Gutierrez for comment on the petition and potential next steps for the district, with the review now pending. A timeline for the review has not been announced.
