The Emporia Recreation Commission’s Rec Center Steering Committee has an important meeting Tuesday.
Board members will meet at 3:30 pm with a goal of deciding whether to move forward with a plan to build a new public recreation center and renovate Lee Beran Rec Center or delay the project.
Tuesday’s meeting follows the board’s April meeting, where it was announced a price increase would likely force the project scope, especially at the new building location — likely Jones Aquatic Center — to be smaller than first envisioned. The cost ceiling is currently $22 million, and the board began discussing potential costs to amenities without making decisions during the April meeting.
If the board decides to move forward, the tentative plan has been to use a 0.25-percent sales tax to fund construction. A Jones Trust grant request is also on Tuesday’s agenda.
A push forward on the overall project also sets in motion a series of community meetings, currently listed as Aug. 13, Sept. 24 and Oct. 22, all at the Lee Beran Rec Center, before the tax question would appear on the Nov. 3 general election ballot.
