The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office says one person is dead after a vehicle went off a county road into a creek near Emporia on Thursday.
Deputies, Emporia/Lyon County EMS, Reading Benefit Volunteer Fire Department, Kansas Highway Patrol and other agencies responded to the 1700 block of Road 175 east of Emporia around 12:30 pm after a pickup truck went from the road into Badger Creek. Initially, the incident was reported as an injury crash. The truck was fully submerged when authorities arrived.
Emporia Fire/EMS pulled the driver, 67-year-old Marvin Dean Kelley of Lebo, from the truck and began life-saving measures, but Kelley was pronounced dead at the scene.
The initial investigation demonstrates Kelly was westbound on Road 175 when the truck left the south side of the road, went airborne and ultimately ended up submerged in the creek. More investigative work is underway.
