It’s National Teachers Hall of Fame induction week in Emporia.
Activities include a proclamation from Emporia city commissioners during the meeting slate Wednesday, followed by a welcome dinner sponsored by Emporia State Federal Credit Union. Inductees will appear on KVOE’s airwaves for a special Talk of Emporia at 10:06 am Thursday before being the featured guests at the Emporia Municipal Band concert starting with festivities at 7:30 pm and the concert at 8.
There are no activities Friday because of the federal Juneteenth holiday, so the culminating activities move to Saturday. The rededication of the National Memorial to Fallen Educators will be at 10 am inside Emporia State University’s Visser Hall — involving four educators and updates on adding another granite memorial stone so teachers, support staffers and administrators killed in the line of duty can have their names inscribed. The annual banquet and induction ceremony will be at 5:30 pm at the ESU Memorial Union Webb Hall.
This year’s inductees are:
*Margaret “Peg” Cagle of Reseda Charter Middle and High School in Reseda, California
*Dr. Melyssa Ferro, a middle school science teacher from Caldwell, Idaho
*Middle school science and social studies teacher Carla Neely of Cleveland, Ohio
*Theresa Maughan, a high school social studies teacher at East Orange STEM Academy in East Orange, New Jersey
*Middle school math, science and gifted teacher for the US Department of Defense Education Activity in Japan, Dr. Michael Anthony Pope
The National Education Association’s Education Service Professional of the Year is Ric Calhoun, a campus supervisor, football coach and union leader at Northshore School District in Washington state.
