With a marginal severe weather risk south of Emporia on Tuesday and a marginal-to-slight risk Wednesday, the National Weather Service has announced a wind alert affecting all area counties.
Lyon, Coffey, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties are in a wind advisory from 7 am to 2 pm Wednesday, while Chase and Greenwood counties are in a separate advisory from 7 am to 3 pm. South winds are expected to be at 20-30 mph steadily with gusts between 40-45 mph during the alert.
The National Weather Service says the wind speeds will blow around unsecured objects and could lead to some power outages.
For Tuesday, Greenwood and parts of south Chase and Coffey counties are in a marginal risk for the potential of wind gusts up to 70 mph and hail to the size of golf balls. For Wednesday, the dividing line between marginal and slight risk areas is the Kansas Turnpike, with the greater risk southeast of the highway. Hail, wind and an isolated tornado is possible from the mid-afternoon to early-evening hours.
