Emporia’s Eastside Community Group has organized a public event to honor Juneteenth.
Activities will be from 4-7 pm Friday at Eastside Memorial Park, including refreshments, food, music and kids’ inflatables.
Juneteenth was officially designated as a national holiday in 2021. The holiday status follows a proclamation freeing slaves reached Galveston Bay, Texas, in 1865 — two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
