The sales and discharge period for fireworks begins soon in Emporia and Lyon County.
The official start comes Saturday starting at 10 am when fireworks stands will be permitted to begin selling fireworks. Emporia Fire Marshall Stephen Beemer says when it comes to operating a stand, whether in a tent, building, or any other structure within the city limits or in the county, the first thing that must be procured is a permit.
And before any vendors can officially begin selling fireworks, they will require a full inspection by EFD, which Beemer says should keep them plenty busy in the coming days.
As for the discharge of fireworks, times will be 10 am to 10 pm weekly between Saturday and July 5th, with the cutoff being extended to 11 pm on July 3rd and 4th. With fireworks set to be filling the night sky for the next week, residents are reminded there are a few guidelines they need to keep in mind to avoid any penalties:
*No fireworks may be discharged in the streets.
*No fireworks may be discharged in parks, the Emporia Golf Course, city parking lots or recreational fields, the Emporia Zoo, the Emporia Recreation Center, or the Jones Aquatic Center parking lot.
*No fireworks may be discharged within 200 square feet of the property line of a hospital, a school, or a nursing home.
