Heat alerts continue for Lyon and several surrounding counties through Saturday.
Heat advisories continue until 8 pm Saturday for Lyon and Wabaunsee counties, while heat warnings continue for Coffey and Osage counties until 8 pm Saturday. Air temperatures in the low 90s and dewpoints in the low 70s will push heat index readings to between 100-105 degrees.
It’s hot enough that everybody, people and animals alike, are searching for relief in whatever means necessary. And that means the residents of the David Traylor Zoo. On KVOE’s Newsmaker segment Thursday, Director Brenda Young says the animals are getting relief from sprinklers and “ice enrichment.”
Young says the ice enrichment has been bolstered by several recent donations of fruits and vegetables.
Young also says the heat relief involves food supplements, including salt — depending on the animal.
Thunderstorms are re-entering the short-term forecast, but it does not appear they will provide anything more than short-term relief. Storms are possible at times from before sunrise Saturday to early Monday morning. The best chance for storms, along with a marginal risk for severe weather, is early Sunday morning — and that depends on how far south a frontal boundary gets Friday night. Damaging wind up to 60 mph appears to be the main hazard. Rainfall totals may be from 0.25 to 0.50 inches.
KVOE and KVOE.com will have updates.
