Overall significant crime in Kansas was at its lowest rate in almost 60 years.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation’s 2025 Crime Index Report says total index crimes, including violent crime and property crime, have declined every year since 2023 and last year’s number was a nearly 20-percent dip from the state’s 10-year average.
The dip, unfortunately, was not seen in violent crime. KBI says violent crime — murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault and aggravated battery — was up 7.5 percent from 2024 and above the 10-year average by 7 percent.
Lyon County had 571 crimes listed in the report, including 79 violent crimes and over 490 property crimes. Last year had 2 murders, both in Emporia, as well as 16 total rapes — of which 14 were in Emporia. There were 2 robberies. Of the property crimes, there were 50 burglaries countywide and 41 of those in Emporia. There were almost 420 thefts, with all but 30 of them in Emporia. There were over 20 vehicle thefts; 18 of those were in Emporia.
