Lyon County Engineer Wayne Scritchfield had an exciting update on the new Rocky Ford Bridge in an interview with KVOE News Thursday afternoon.
Highway Department crews concluded work on the new bridge earlier this week after work got underway this past October. According to Scritchfield, the project went as smoothly as one could hope for, despite a few minor delays.
Scritchfield says it is exciting to have traffic back open in the area, but cautions drivers not to get overexcited when it comes to accessing the bridge, noting they will need to be vigilant.
The new bridge replaces the historic Rocky Ford Bridge, also known as Bird Bridge, due to its being the site of the Sandra Bird murder back in 1983. The original bridge will be left standing; however, traffic has been completely shut down on it due to safety concerns, and the structure will maintain its status as a state historic site.
