A special meeting is coming Monday for USD 251 North Lyon County.
Board members will discuss health insurance plans for the 2026-27 academic year. USD 251 is part of the Greenbush collective involving close to 50 school districts across Kansas, and Greenbush is moving its coverage from Blue Cross Blue Shield to UnitedHealthcare. Board members had questions about cost increases and coverage options during their regular meeting earlier this month.
Separately, board members will discuss the bond issues designed to bring a new high school to Americus and an athletics complex just northeast of the town. Over $31 million in total is set to go onto the Nov 3 ballot, with the vast majority designed to fund the new high school. Board members Gary Heine has questioned the legality of the bond package, saying the total amount goes well over the legal cap of 14 percent above a district’s assessed valuations, or in USD 251’s case, around $14.6 million. The district has been working to modify that limit, but Heine has told KVOE News that process should have concluded before the board voted to put the bonds on the November ballot.
Conversations about Northern Heights High School and potential public meetings are also part of the special meeting, which begins at 6 pm Monday at the board meeting room in Americus.
