Cyclosporiaisis cases aren’t widespread, but the numbers have jumped in the latest update from Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
Last week, KDHE announced 55 cases, all except 5 being logged since June 1. The statewide number reported Wednesday is 289. There have been 12 people hospitalized, up from 5 last week. Close to 150 cases are “pending interviews.”
For area counties, Lyon County is still listed as having 1-5 cases, while Osage County has a confirmed count of 7 cases. Coffey County now has up to 5 cases after not having any last week.
Cyclosporiasis is caused by a parasite usually found on fresh fruits or vegetables. The illness causes a range of symptoms, including explosive and potentially repeated diarrhea, as well as nausea, occasional vomiting, loss of appetite and weight, cramps, bloating and a low-grade fever.
Nationally, as of Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control has almost 4,200 lab-confirmed cases with another 7,400 under investigation.
