Showers and storms through mid-afternoon Friday could bring another 0.50 to 0.75 inches before chances fade.
The heat that we saw last weekend into early this week returns quickly. Air temperatures in the low 90s Saturday could lead to heat index readings as high as 106, given dewpoints in the mid- and upper 70s. Sunday and Monday will see high temperatures in the upper 90s to 100 with heat index readings possibly as high as 105. Tuesday has highs in the mid-90s with heat index readings as high as 102.
Given those predictions, the National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat watch from 1 pm Saturday through 7 pm Tuesday. Lyon, Coffey, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties are currently included. Residents are advised to begin drinking extra water Friday before the heat returns this weekend. Once the heat is in place, the advice — as usual — is to wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, move strenuous activities to early morning or evening, take frequent breaks in air conditioning or shade, check on elderly neighbors and never leave children and pets in unattended vehicles while on errands.
