Rainfall over the last few days helped to keep temperatures more mild for the mid-summer months; however, that’s all about to quickly change.
Following temperatures in the mid to upper 80s the last several days, Mother Nature will be cranking up the heat starting Saturday with air temperatures in the upper 90s as the high, with heat index values near 110. The rest of the weekend and upcoming work week is shaping up to be very similar, with temperatures again near 100 Sunday and in excess of 100 come Monday.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Bill Gargan says the recent rainfall that passed through the area since midweek is playing a large role in the steamy conditions.
In response to the temperatures, the National Weather Service has issued multiple heat-related advisories which cover the entire listening area, beginning with an extreme heat watch for Lyon and most surrounding counties from Sunday night to Tuesday evening on top of a heat advisory for Lyon, Morris and Wabaunsee counties from 1 pm Saturday to 9 pm Sunday. An Extreme heat warning currently covers Coffey and Osage counties from 1 pm Saturday to 9 pm Sunday and Greenwood County from 10 am to 8 pm Saturday.
With the high temperatures comes a high risk of heat-related illnesses, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke. With that in mind, residents, especially those who have to work outdoors, are reminded to take precautions to avoid any complications, including drinking plenty of water and staying properly hydrated.
Lyon County Health Officer Dr. Ladun Oyenuga says there are several warning signs you should be watchful for that will indicate you may be succumbing to the heat.
Dr. Oyenuga also noted that those with hypertension or similar conditions need to take extra precautions as they are more susceptible to heat-borne conditions.
