Closing a door to a kitchen likely limited fire damage to a house near the Lyon-Greenwood county line Sunday afternoon.
Just after 5:30 pm, Olpe, Emporia, Madison and Hartford-Neosho Rapids firefighters were dispatched to 243 Road K — officially in rural Madison. Olpe Fire Chief Wade Schmidt says the homeowner was using a garden hose near the back door to contain the fire when Olpe crews arrived. Schmidt also says the homeowner closed a door to the kitchen, which kept the fire contained to that area of the 2-story house.
Crews from Olpe, Emporia and Madison got the fire under control, but not before there was heavy smoke damage throughout the structure.
All the house occupants were out of the home when firefighters arrived. There were no injuries reported.
Temperatures were near 100 degrees with heat index readings around 107 as firefighters did their work.
The fire’s cause is under investigation.
