A week remains before residents across Kansas go to the polls — if they haven’t already voted.
On KVOE’s Newsmaker segment Monday, Lyon County Election Officer Amie Jones says over 560 people have used advance voting processes, either offsite at the Fairgrounds Anderson Building or on-site at the Lyon County Courthouse as of Monday morning. Another 400 people have requested mail ballots ahead of the 5 pm deadline Tuesday, with over 160 ballots returned and and accepted.
The advance mail ballot process was shaken up earlier this month when a Douglas County judge reinstated a 3-day grace period for mail ballots to get postmarked on Election Day and return to election offices so they can be counted in the election cycle. Jones says there could be additional guidance from the Kansas Secretary of State’s Office before the primary Aug 4.
Advance voting continues at the Election Office between 8 am and 5 pm this week and from 8 am to noon Aug 3.
Jones says her staff is ready for the primary. And Primary Day is a long day, starting at 5:30 am and likely ending no sooner than 11:30 pm.
If you’re voting in person, Jones says the process hasn’t changed.
Jones says she would like to see turnout up to 30 percent. She would not be surprised to see a higher turnout, given the constitutional amendment question designed to change the initial selection method for Kansas Supreme Court justices and the nearly 50-percent turnout for the last constitutional amendment question on abortion rights 4 years ago.
