Five decades ago, SOS began serving people in domestic crisis situations. The mission evolves as it continues, and the agency welcomed the community to a 3-layer birthday celebration at Peter Pan Park on Thursday.
SOS Executive Director Mickey Edwards says the community gathering highlights the true goal of the work: healthy families.
Edwards appreciates the presence of community partners — including those who were part of Thursday’s event like Emporia Fire, Emporia Arts Council and IHOP.
Besides the celebration of SOS and its 50th year of operations, the event also highlighted the 30th anniversary of CASA of the Flint Hills and the 25th anniversary of the Child Advocacy Center.
Edwards says that constant review process led to the additions of CASA, the Child Advocacy Center and the Child Visitation and Exchange Center. That process may lead to some future adjustments.
Another concern: staff burnout.
As SOS Strong continues until Aug 14, where 14 people are working to generate at least $1,000 and awareness for SOS programs, SOS is now getting ready for Hope-A-Palooza, which will also highlight the 50th anniversary, on Sept 11. Comedian Ran’D Shine is returning to Emporia as the featured performer. Tickets will be available soon.
