The Emporia City Commission is meeting Wednesday. It will not meet in person.
A news release from the city says meetings Wednesday and Aug 19 will be held virtually “in the interest of public safety.”
Meetings will be available for view at emporiaks.gov/agendas starting at 11 am to be “consistent with the Kansas Open Meetings Act.” The normal public comment periods will not be offered, but residents wanting to ask questions or provide comments can either call 620-343-4289 or email citycommission@emporiaks.gov before the meeting.
City Manager Trey Cocking says there is an investigation underway, so the city cannot comment. However, Emporia Police Chief Ed Owens tells KVOE News there have been credible threats levied against city commissioners — and virtually all Emporia city employees — over the last several weeks.
As far as official business in the action session, city commissioners will discuss a verified petition about an ordinance designed to prohibit high-impact data centers before awarding a Community Development Block Grant contract for improvements to the DeBauge Family Sports Complex. Commissioners may also approve a conditional use permit for a single-family attached dwelling at 1228 West 5th and a print services contract. The study meeting agenda includes a budget discussion and talk about economic development service agreements.
