Thanks to its Second Saturday Breakfast, the Emporia American Legion Post 5 is helping some local families get ready for school.
This weekend, the Second Saturday Breakfast will feature a backpack giveaway. Post Commander Clay Childs says this is a way to help other existing back-to-school activities making life easier for students and their parents.
Backpacks will be available at 10 am. One hundred 17-inch backpacks will be available while supplies last, and Childs is encouraging parents to bring their children to the Legion on Saturday.
Attendance has steadily increased for the Second Saturday Breakfast, letting the Legion support its operations — as well as the backpacks, the Emporia High presentation of “A Piece of My Heart” at the International Thespian Festival earlier this summer and community activities.
Separately, the Legion is getting ready for the 25th anniversary of the Sept 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Childs says plans are in place for what he calls a “Where Were You” event in the green space just west of the Legion that evening.
Childs says activities continue later in the evening starting at 7:30 pm.
Childs says the Sept 11 activities this year come with ongoing plans to bring a traveling memorial to Emporia, either next year or in 2028.
The Second Saturday Breakfasts take place between 7:30-10:30 am.
