The Kansas Turnpike Authority has announced a long-term investment plan, which will roll into tolls for Turnpike users.
The Turnpike Authority has outlined a $500 million, multi-year plan to invest in facilities, infrastructure, operational improvements and technology from terminal to terminal following a long-term needs assessment process. In general terms, the KTA says this means:
*Modernizing and preserving roadway infrastructure
*Expanding capacity in growing travel corridors
*Improving interchanges and system connectivity
*Enhancing customer amenities and service areas
*Advancing technology and operational systems
*Supporting workforce readiness and organizational effectiveness
Locally, this includes the work now underway to redevelop the Emporia service area — a $15 million, better than year-long project to consolidate into one facility for fuel, food and other customer services. Systemwide, it also includes interchange improvements and technology enhancements.
The plan is getting funded by a 3-year, 3-percent toll increase for passenger vehicles and a 3-year, 4-percent increase for commercial vehicles effective Sept 1. It’s the first adjustment for tolls in 4 years. The KTA says the improvements are “customer-funded, not tax-funded,” with the highway not receiving state or federal tax support.
