Now 2 weeks after a destructive hailstorm hit Emporia and areas to the east, the city of Emporia is giving guidance for residents who may not have started the repair process.
The city says all roofing contractors have to meet city and state requirements. In fact, the city has a specific roofing contractor information page at its website, emporiaks.gov.
The city also encourages residents to take their own protective measures, starting by verifying the contractor is properly registered and licensed — and including:
*Get multiple written estimates.
*Research reviews and company credentials.
*Avoid paying the full cost upfront.
*Contact your insurance company before agreeing to repairs.
*Be cautious of high-pressure sales tactics or demands for an immediate decision.
This connects with a now-ongoing campaign from the Kansas Attorney General’s Office to remind residents about protecting themselves from unregistered or fraudulent contractors, including roofers. The Attorney General’s Office says residents can confirm a company’s registration status by going online to ag.ks.gov. It also recommends that residents get recommendations, references, written estimates from at least 3 different contractors and do their own homework by checking complaint records through the Better Business Bureau.
Residents with questions can call the city’s Building Department at 620-343-4270.
Hail up to 2 inches in diameter caused significant to destructive damage for roofs, windows, siding, trees, vehicles and crops.
