A new school year highlights legal changes affecting schools — and in one case, communication between districts and their students.
House Bill 2299 has districts using their social media platforms as “one-way” communication methods with students. Essentially, districts can share information or updates but they can’t have any private or 2-way social media conversations with students.
USD 251 North Lyon County Superintendent Bob Blair says there aren’t a lot of changes ahead for his district.
USD 252 Southern Lyon County Superintendent Ryan Muhlig says the district was already moving away from traditional 2-way social media conversations as part of a broader push to halt use of cell phones during class.
USD 253 Director of Community Relations Lyndel Landgren says the district has stopped responding to direct social media messages and it has stopped its involvement in social media conversations. Parents with questions can get direct 2-way information through ParentSquare, email or phone.
