The Emporia City Commission will convene a special meeting next week to take action following a court ruling regarding a petition question for the upcoming general election.
The commission will convene at noon Wednesday inside the Municipal Courtroom at William L. White Auditorium to “discuss and take action on pending ballot petitions and related legal actions.” The announcement of the meeting comes 24-hours after Senior Judge Glenn Braun ordered the city to place a petition question seeking to ban high-impact data centers in the Emporia city limits for 10 years on the upcoming ballot.
However, Braun also ruled that should voters choose to approve the question, it will not be enacted or published until after a ruling is made as to whether the petition is legislative or administrative in nature. Should it be determined to be administrative, it is possible the petition will be deemed invalid and no ordinance enacted.
As this is a special meeting, there will be no public comment period offered.
