In a 6-3 decision, the US Supreme Court is letting President Donald Trump move forward with certain parts of an executive order on mail-in voting.
With the ruling, ABC News says Homeland Security can create a federal citizenship list and share it with states. This will also let the US Attorney General prosecute state officials issuing ballots to ineligible voters. While this lets the US Postal Service set the rules for state mail ballot designs, it does not let the Postal Service verify the voting eligibility of people receiving mail ballots and it does not let the Postal Service withhold ballots from people that aren’t on a government list because those potential policy measures are currently on hold through a different legal case.
How this affects the overall midterm processes is to be determined. How this affects Lyon County operations is, for now, nonexistent. Lyon County Clerk and Election Officer Amie Jones says executive orders don’t affect operations when states have their own rules and policies. Currently, Kansas has a National Change of Address List produced by the Postal Service annually at the county level with help from the state. Election Office workers then compare addresses on file at the county and Postal Service levels.
