Demolition work at Hartford’s City Hall is into the next phase — but not quite to the full scope of the task ahead.
Some demolition has happened, but Leiser Excavating is in the process of adding safety measures to the building as a way to make sure nearby structures don’t get damaged when the old City Hall and Community Building come down to the ground. The current schedule has full demolition beginning as soon as Monday and lasting most of next week.
City Hall was built in the early 1880s, but the roof was partially torn off and much of the upper structure was damaged by a windstorm July 4. The building has been considered as unsafe since the storm, but there have been some people apparently nosing around the building in an unsafe manner.
Leiser Excavating will have a few bricks set aside near the building so people can take those home as keepsakes if they can do so safely.
Hartford city government currently operates out of a trailer directly west of the new Community Center. The City Council is in the process of finding a new address for a new building.
