After two bridge strike incidents in Lyon County over the past month, the Kansas Turnpike Authority has an update on repair plans for one of the bridges.
Spokesperson Jeri Biehler says the Kansas Highway 99 bridge at mile marker 140 had minor surface damage after an oversized load of large cylinders got wedged under the bridge on August 22. Since K-99 is a state-owned road, Biehler says the KTA and Kansas Department of Transportation are coordinating on the repairs to come.
That incident followed a bridge strike on the KTA bridge over US Highway 50 on August 14, again due to an oversized load. There was some damage, but nothing that affects the short-term integrity of the structure and not to the extent of the strike in April 2025 that caused months of repairs. Biehler has told KVOE News repairs will be scheduled later “to extend the bridge’s operational lifespan.”
