A heat advisory has ended for Lyon and most surrounding counties. That doesn’t mean the heat itself has come to an end.
Air temperatures will be just short of 100 degrees Tuesday. Dewpoints in the 60s will keep heat index readings close to the true air temperature, climbing as high as 101 in Emporia by late afternoon.
National Weather Service meteorologist Matt Wolters says Tuesday’s forecast looks like the forecasts every day since Saturday, which has seen air temperatures as high as 104 and heat index readings up to 106 — including Monday’s high of 103 and peak heat index of 103.
Wolters says the rest of the week will see more humidity, so air temperatures will be in the mid- to upper 90s with heat index readings up above 100. He also says the hot, dry conditions may loop into next week as well.
The City of Emporia has announced cooling centers at several locations:
*Emporia Police Department lobby. Pets are welcome if controlled by the owner.
*Lyon County Sheriff’s Office lobby. Pets are welcome if controlled by the owner.
*Emporia Public Library. Hours are 9 am to 6 pm weekdays and 1-5 pm weekends.
Wolters encourages residents to do what they can to beat the heat.
