The Lyon County Planning and Appeals Board will have a special meeting next week.
Board members are meeting at 7 pm September 9 to discuss possible text changes to the county’s regulations on solar energy. A public question-and-answer session will be included.
The conversation about solar energy began picking up steam as Evergy started talking with landowners near the Emporia Energy Center about the prospects of a solar energy facility on all sides of the peak energy production plant. That effort had letters going out to landowners announcing Evergy’s initial interest, followed by at least one set of meetings with landowners before the Lyon County Commission approved a moratorium on solar projects ending December 1. Commissioners also approved a moratorium on data center matters expiring January 22.
Evergy has said the potential solar farm would help to address general power needs for its grid identified over 6 years ago as opposed to being connected strictly to the Flint Hills Digital Campus data center project.
Before the Q&A session, the Planning and Appeals Board will discuss a private RV park request and a communications tower.
The meeting will be in the Lyon County Courthouse Annex.
